Here is a pattern I encounter regularly. Someone has been doing Awareness Through Movement classes for a year or more. Their movement quality is genuinely excellent. They can articulate their spine segment by segment, roll from their back to their side with a smoothness that most thirty-year-olds can not manage, and they have developed a sensitivity to their own movement habits that is honestly impressive.
They are also losing bone density. And their connective tissue, particularly through the hips and ankles, is becoming less resilient, not more.
This is not a failure of the Feldenkrais Method. The method was never designed to address bone density or connective tissue resilience through loading. But it highlights something I consider non-negotiable in my own practice: the body needs load. Not just awareness, not just better organization, not just more options. Load. Progressive, intentional, appropriately dosed mechanical stress.
What I mean by loading
Let me be specific, because “loading” has become one of those words that means different things to different people.
When I talk about loading, I mean placing the body under mechanical stress that exceeds its resting baseline. This can be as simple as standing up from a chair without using your hands, or as demanding as carrying a heavy sandbag up a hill. The key feature is that the tissues of the body are being asked to manage forces beyond what they experience during gentle, exploratory movement.
This is different from what happens in most Feldenkrais work, and the difference is intentional on both sides. Feldenkrais practitioners deliberately minimize effort in their lessons. The reasoning is sound: when effort is low, the nervous system can detect finer distinctions. When you are straining, you lose access to subtle information. Moshe Feldenkrais himself was quite explicit about this. He wanted people learning, not efforting. And in the context of neurological education, he was right.
But learning and adaptation are not the same thing. The nervous system learns through reduced effort. Bones, muscles, and connective tissue adapt through increased effort. And if your goal is a body that functions well in the real world, a world of gravity, ground reaction forces, carrying groceries, catching yourself when you stumble, you need both.
Wolff’s Law and why your bones are listening
Julius Wolff figured this out in the 1890s, and nothing since has overturned his basic insight: bone remodels along the lines of mechanical stress. Load a bone, and the osteoblasts get to work, laying down new tissue along the vectors of force. Remove load, and the osteoclasts take over, breaking tissue down. This is not metaphor. It is cellular biology. Your bones are literally listening to the forces you put through them and deciding, moment by moment, how much structure to maintain.
This is why astronauts lose bone density in space. This is why bedrest causes osteoporosis. And this is why, with all due respect to the beauty of gentle floor-based movement, rolling on a mat does not give your femur the mechanical signal it needs to stay strong.
I work with a lot of clients over fifty. Many of them are women navigating the hormonal shifts that accelerate bone loss. When I tell them that loading is non-negotiable, I am not being macho about it. I am being honest about the biology. You can have the most beautifully organized nervous system in the world, the most elegant movement patterns, the deepest somatic awareness. If you are not loading your skeleton, you are losing bone. Period.
The good news is that loading does not have to mean barbell squats and deadlifts, though those are excellent if your body is ready for them. It can mean weighted carries, step-ups, lunges, push-ups, or simply walking on varied terrain. But it has to be there. It has to be progressive. And it has to produce forces that your bones register as meaningful.
Muscles need a reason to stay
Muscles are similar, though the mechanism is different. Skeletal muscle adapts to demand. Place it under progressive overload and it responds by increasing its cross-sectional area, its force production capacity, and its neuromuscular efficiency. Remove the demand and it atrophies. This is the use-it-or-lose-it principle that everyone has heard, but not everyone takes seriously enough.
Here is where this gets relevant to the Feldenkrais conversation. Many Feldenkrais students develop exquisite motor control. They can recruit muscles with a precision that is genuinely admirable. But motor control without muscular capacity is like having a beautifully tuned sports car with a lawnmower engine. You know exactly what you want to do, and you lack the raw material to do it.
The pattern shows up clearly in people in their seventies who have been doing Feldenkrais work for years. Their body awareness is better than most people half their age. They can feel the asymmetry in the pelvis, sense when breathing is restricted on one side, notice when they are gripping through the jaw. Remarkable stuff. But they can not get up from the floor without significant struggle. Not because they lack coordination. Because they lack strength.
The quads have atrophied. The glutes are weak. The muscles of the trunk, while beautifully coordinated in their firing patterns, simply do not have enough contractile tissue to manage the demands of daily life with any margin of safety. A stumble on a curb, a grandchild who wants to be picked up, a flight of stairs when the elevator is broken. These are not motor control problems. They are capacity problems.
Think of it like owning a perfectly tuned sports car with a lawnmower engine. The alignment is excellent. The steering is responsive. But you are not making it up the hill.
When progressive loading gets added to this person’s program, their movement quality does not degrade. It improves. Because now the nervous system has more to work with. The awareness built through Feldenkrais becomes the foundation for meaningful strength gains. The body knows how to organize itself. It just needs the muscular horsepower to express that organization under real-world demands.
Connective tissue is the long game
If bones and muscles are relatively straightforward in their response to load, connective tissue is more nuanced. Fascia, tendons, ligaments, and the extracellular matrix all respond to mechanical stress, but on different timescales and through different mechanisms.
Tendons, for instance, respond best to sustained isometric loading and slow, heavy resistance work. The research on this is quite clear. If you want to rehabilitate a tendinopathy or build tendon resilience, you need to load the tendon. Stretching alone does not cut it. Gentle movement alone does not cut it. The tissue needs to experience meaningful mechanical stress to stimulate collagen synthesis and remodeling.
Fascia is even more interesting. The work of Robert Schleip and others has shown that fascial tissue responds to a variety of loading strategies, including bouncing, sustained pressure, and dynamic stretching. But the common thread is mechanical input. Fascia that is never loaded becomes brittle, dehydrated, and less responsive. Fascia that is loaded appropriately becomes more elastic, better hydrated, and more capable of transmitting force efficiently.
This matters enormously for my clients because fascia is not just a structural tissue. As I have written about throughout this series, fascia is richly innervated with mechanoreceptors and proprioceptors. It is one of the primary organs of body sense. When fascia becomes unhealthy from disuse, you do not just lose structural integrity. You lose sensory information. The very awareness that Feldenkrais practitioners work so hard to cultivate depends, in part, on fascial health. And fascial health depends on load.
The confidence piece nobody talks about
There is another dimension to loading that does not show up in the biomechanics literature but that I see in my practice every single week. Loading builds confidence.
Not the performative, mirror-selfie kind of confidence. Something quieter and more fundamental. The confidence that comes from knowing your body can handle what the world throws at it.
I watch this transformation happen regularly. A client who has been afraid to pick up a heavy box starts carrying weighted objects in the gym and realizes the movement is manageable. A woman who has been avoiding stairs because her knees feel unstable starts doing step-ups with progressively heavier dumbbells and discovers that her knees are more capable than she believed. A man who has been moving cautiously through the world, bracing against the possibility of pain, starts deadlifting and finds that his back, properly organized and adequately strong, can handle real forces without complaint.
This kind of confidence changes how people live. It is not about being “fit” in the Instagram sense. It is about having a genuine, embodied trust in your own physical capacity. And you cannot get there without loading. You can become more aware of your body. You can learn to move with more grace and less effort. But until you have tested yourself against meaningful resistance and discovered that you are capable, there is a layer of confidence that remains inaccessible.
The critical distinction: loading a well-organized body vs. loading a compensated one
Now here is where my work and the Feldenkrais conversation come together in a way that actually matters.
Loading is non-negotiable. But loading a poorly organized body is a recipe for reinforcing the very patterns you are trying to change. If someone has a significant rotation through their thorax and you hand them a barbell, they will squat with that rotation. They will get stronger in their compensated pattern. They will build capacity, yes, but capacity to do the wrong thing more forcefully.
This is where the sequencing matters, and why the previous post in this series is not separate from this one but directly connected to it.
In my practice, I follow a general principle: organize first, then load. We use hands-on structural work to create the physical space for better alignment. We use movement education, which includes some of the awareness principles that Feldenkrais so beautifully articulated, to help the nervous system learn how to use that new space. And then we load. We add resistance, challenge balance, increase demand, and ask the body to perform under real-world conditions.
The order matters. Loading without organization means stronger compensation. Organization without loading means fragile improvement. You need both, in the right sequence, to produce lasting change.
I see this play out constantly. A client finishes a structural integration series and their body is beautifully reorganized. The tissue is more open, the alignment is improved, the movement patterns are cleaner. If they go home and do nothing, that improvement fades. Not because the structural work was not real, but because the new organization has not been loaded. It has not been reinforced by the kind of mechanical stress that tells bones, muscles, and connective tissue: this is our new normal, build accordingly.
Loading is what locks structural change in. It is the body’s way of committing to a new pattern.
What progressive means
I want to be careful with the word “progressive” because it is important and often misunderstood. Progressive loading does not mean adding weight every session until you are competing in powerlifting. It means starting at a level of challenge that the body can manage with good organization and gradually increasing that challenge as capacity builds.
For some of my clients, progressive loading starts with bodyweight movements. A squat to a chair. A wall push-up. A single-leg balance hold. For others who come in with more training history, it starts further along the spectrum. The point is not the starting weight. The point is the trajectory. The body needs to experience a gradually increasing demand over time.
This is actually quite compatible with Feldenkrais thinking in one important sense. Feldenkrais was a genius about meeting people where they are. He understood that you cannot force the nervous system to learn. You have to find the right level of challenge, enough to create learning, not so much that it triggers protective bracing. I apply the same principle to loading. The right load is the one that challenges the system without overwhelming its organizational capacity.
Too much too soon and the body reverts to compensation. Too little and nothing changes.
The synthesis
I have spent a lot of words in this post making the case for loading, and I want to be clear that this is not an argument against awareness-based practice. In the next post, I will make the case that awareness is genuinely important, that it is not nothing, and that the Feldenkrais tradition got something profoundly right about the relationship between attention and change.
But awareness and loading are not competing strategies. They are complementary ones. Awareness tells you where you are. Structure gives you the physical freedom to go somewhere else. And loading gives you the capacity to stay there.
Take any one of those away and the system is incomplete. A body that is aware but structurally bound is frustrated. A body that is structurally free but unaware will drift back to old habits. And a body that is aware and structurally free but never loaded is fragile. It has options it cannot sustain.
The body I want for my clients, the body I want for myself, is one that is aware, structurally organized, and strong. Not just strong in the gym sense, but strong in the sense that matters: capable of meeting the real demands of a real life with control, resilience, precision, and ease.
That requires load. There is no shortcut and no substitute.
