I am not a Feldenkrais practitioner. I want to say that clearly at the top, because what follows might sound like I am claiming some kind of dual expertise. I am not. I have never completed a Feldenkrais training. I do not teach Awareness Through Movement lessons. I do not do Functional Integration sessions. My training is in Structural Integration, specifically the Anatomy Trains approach, and that is what I practice.
But I have been profoundly influenced by Feldenkrais thinking. Not in a vague, “I appreciate all modalities” kind of way. In specific, concrete ways that show up in my treatment room every day. Principles I learned from studying Feldenkrais’s work, from watching skilled Feldenkrais practitioners, from conversations with colleagues in that tradition, and from observing what happens in bodies that have been through good Feldenkrais work.
This post is about those specific principles. It is, I suppose, a thank-you note to a tradition that is not mine but that has made me better at my own.
The value of slowness
The first thing Feldenkrais taught me is that speed is the enemy of learning.
Early in my career, I had a tendency to work too fast. Not in the sense of being careless, but in the sense of wanting to get through the structural territory I had planned for a session. I had a map. I had a strategy. And I would move through the tissue with a purposefulness that, looking back, sometimes outpaced my client’s ability to integrate what was happening.
Feldenkrais practitioners understand something that structural workers sometimes forget: the nervous system needs time to register change. When you create a structural shift in tissue, there is a neurological event that needs to accompany it. The brain needs to update its map. The mechanoreceptors in the fascia need to send new information. The proprioceptive system needs to recalibrate. And all of this takes time. More time than I was giving it.
I remember watching a Feldenkrais practitioner work with a client’s shoulder. She spent what felt like an eternity, probably three or four minutes, making the tiniest movements of the scapula. Barely visible. Just little oscillations, pauses, redirections. And the client’s entire shoulder girdle reorganized in a way that was frankly stunning.
I asked her about it afterward. She said something I have never forgotten: “I was not trying to move the shoulder. I was trying to give the nervous system time to notice the shoulder.”
That changed how I work. I still do deep fascial work. I still engage with tissue directly and sometimes intensely. But I pace differently now. I pause more. After making a significant intervention in the tissue, I will often stop, keep my hands still, and let the client feel what just happened. Sometimes I ask them to breathe into the area. Sometimes I ask them to notice what changed. Sometimes I just wait.
The results are better. Not because I became a Feldenkrais practitioner, but because I learned from the Feldenkrais tradition that the nervous system is not a passive recipient of structural change. It is an active participant that needs to be included in the conversation, and including it often means slowing down.
Not over-cueing
This one was harder for me to learn and I am still working on it.
Structural Integration practitioners tend to be explainers. We love to tell people what we are finding, what we are doing, and why. And there is value in that. Education is a legitimate part of what we offer. But there is a line between useful information and over-cueing, and I used to cross it regularly.
Over-cueing is when you give someone so much verbal instruction that their conscious mind takes over the movement and their body’s natural intelligence gets pushed to the side. Stand here. Now shift your weight left. Feel your foot. Now push through the heel. Now notice your hip. Now breathe. Now relax your jaw.
By the time you have said all that, the person is no longer moving. They are executing a series of conscious commands, and the result is stiff, effortful, and disconnected from anything organic.
Feldenkrais practitioners are masterful at not over-cueing. In an Awareness Through Movement lesson, the teacher gives instructions that are deliberately incomplete. They might say “turn your head slowly to the right and notice what happens.” They do not say “turn your head to the right while keeping your shoulders square and your jaw relaxed and your breathing steady.” The incompleteness is the point. It leaves space for the student to discover their own solution, to notice their own patterns, to find their own way.
Moshe Feldenkrais was explicit about this. He believed that when you give someone a solution, you rob them of the learning that comes from finding it themselves. And while I do not take this as far as a Feldenkrais practitioner would, because there are moments in structural work where direct instruction is genuinely necessary, the principle has fundamentally changed how I cue movement.
These days, when I am working with a client on movement education, I am much more likely to say “walk across the room and tell me what you notice” than to say “walk across the room and try to push off through your big toe while maintaining a level pelvis.” The first invitation creates discovery. The second creates performance. Discovery lasts. Performance fades the moment the client leaves the room.
I catch myself falling into this trap most often when working on gait after a hip issue. I start wanting to correct every detail. Lead with the pelvis. Let the arm swing. Push off the back foot. And then I remember the Feldenkrais principle and I stop. Instead, I make one structural intervention in the hip flexor and say, “Walk again and see if anything feels different.”
The person walks. And without a single verbal cue from me, their stride lengthens, the arm swing becomes more reciprocal, and the pelvis starts rotating more freely. The nervous system finds the solution once the tissue allows it. I do not need to explain the solution. I need to create the conditions for it and then get out of the way.
More effort is not always the answer
This might be the Feldenkrais principle that has influenced me most deeply, and it runs counter to a lot of what the fitness and strength world teaches.
In most training contexts, when something is not working, the default response is to try harder. Push more. Squeeze more. Engage more. And sometimes that is exactly right. As I wrote in the previous post about loading, muscles need progressive overload to adapt. Effort is necessary.
But there are situations where more effort is precisely the wrong approach, where the problem is not insufficient force but poorly organized force. And Feldenkrais saw this with extraordinary clarity.
He had a concept that I find endlessly useful: the idea that reducing effort can reveal options that effort obscures. When you grip, when you brace, when you try hard, you lock your body into a narrow range of strategies. Usually the strategies you already know. Usually the compensatory patterns you have been running for years. The effort itself prevents the nervous system from discovering alternatives.
I see this in my practice constantly. A client is trying to find their deep hip rotators and they are squeezing their glutes so hard that the smaller, more precise muscles cannot fire. A client is trying to stabilize their lumbar spine and they are bracing their entire trunk, turning what should be a subtle, dynamic process into a rigid block. A client is trying to improve their balance and they are gripping through their toes so hard that the foot cannot adapt to the surface beneath it.
In every one of these cases, the answer is not more effort but less. Or more precisely, better-organized effort, which almost always feels like less effort from the client’s perspective.
I learned this from Feldenkrais, and it has made me a dramatically better movement educator. When I see a client struggling with a movement, my first question now is not “are they trying hard enough?” but “are they trying too hard?” More often than not, the excess effort is the problem. The pattern they need is buried under the pattern they are muscling their way through.
The practical application looks like this. When I am teaching someone to hinge at the hip and they are clearly compensating with their lumbar spine, I do not tell them to hinge harder. I make the task easier. I reduce the range of motion, or I change the position, or I give them a lighter load, until the movement becomes easy enough that their nervous system can find a better strategy. Then we gradually increase demand from there.
This is pure Feldenkrais thinking adapted to a loading context. Find the level of challenge where the nervous system can learn. Then build from there. It is simple, it is effective, and I would not have figured it out on my own.
Respecting the nervous system’s timeline
Related to the above, Feldenkrais taught me that the nervous system has its own pace and that pace is not always convenient for my treatment plan.
Early in my career, I had a somewhat mechanical view of structural change. Do the tissue work, cue the movement, get the result. If the client did not integrate the change immediately, I would cue harder, explain more, try different approaches, essentially trying to push the neurological change through on my timeline.
Feldenkrais practitioners have a much more patient relationship with neurological learning. They understand that the nervous system sometimes needs to sit with new information before it can organize a new response. That a lesson might not bear fruit until days later. That the process of integration is not linear and cannot be rushed without compromising the depth of the learning.
I have seen this play out in my own practice often enough to take it seriously. Sometimes a client walks out of a session and the structural change is obvious but the movement has not caught up yet. They stand differently, but they walk the same way. If I try to force the movement change in that session, I often get a superficial correction that does not last. If I trust the process and let them come back the following week, they frequently walk in with the new pattern already integrated. Their nervous system did the work between sessions, in its own time, through its own process.
This requires a kind of faith that does not come naturally to someone trained in a hands-on, interventionist tradition. Structural Integration is, by nature, active. We do things. We make changes. We intervene. Feldenkrais thinking has taught me that sometimes the best intervention is to create the conditions for change and then trust the organism to figure it out.
I do not always get this right. I still catch myself pushing too hard for integration within a single session. But the awareness is there (ironic, I know) and it makes me better.
The difference between fixing and learning
Here is maybe the most philosophical thing I have taken from the Feldenkrais tradition.
In the structural world, we talk about fixing things. Fixing posture. Fixing alignment. Fixing movement patterns. And in a sense, this is legitimate. If someone’s fascial web has remodeled into a dysfunctional pattern, that pattern needs to be addressed directly. Calling it “fixing” is not unreasonable.
But Feldenkrais framed the entire project differently. He did not talk about fixing. He talked about learning. His clients were not patients. They were students. They were not receiving treatment. They were receiving lessons. This was not just semantic cleverness. It reflected a fundamentally different relationship between practitioner and client.
When you fix someone, you are the expert and they are the recipient. The knowledge and agency flow in one direction. When you teach someone, you are creating the conditions for them to develop their own capacity. The knowledge stays with them. The agency is theirs.
I have tried to bring more of this into my practice. I still do hands-on structural work that is, in a real sense, me doing something to someone’s tissue. I am not going to pretend otherwise. But the movement education component of my work has shifted significantly toward a learning model. I am not trying to install correct movement patterns in people. I am trying to create experiences that help them discover better options for themselves.
The practical difference is in how things hold. When I fix a pattern without teaching, the person is dependent on me. They need to come back when it reverts. When I help someone learn a pattern, they own it. They can find it on their own. They can adapt it to new situations. The learning becomes part of them in a way that a correction never does.
What I still disagree about
I want to end this post honestly. I have spent a lot of words here praising Feldenkrais principles, and the praise is genuine. But I do not agree with everything in the tradition, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise.
In the next post, I will lay out, respectfully, what I think the Feldenkrais Method gets wrong. Or, more precisely, where its scope is limited in ways that its more enthusiastic advocates do not always acknowledge.
But here is the thing. Disagreeing with a tradition and learning from it are not contradictory. In fact, the traditions I have learned the most from are the ones I argue with the most. The argument itself is productive. It forces me to articulate what I actually believe and why. It sharpens my thinking. It keeps me from settling into the comfortable certainty that my way is the only way.
Feldenkrais thinking has made me slower when I need to be slow, quieter when I need to be quiet, and more willing to trust the process when my instinct is to intervene. It has made me a better practitioner. A method I do not practice has changed the method I do.
That seems worth acknowledging. And that is, in the previous post’s language, the kind of awareness that actually leads somewhere.
