Post-holiday reset
Undo a month of sitting, travel, and standing around, and start the year moving well
A month of travel, big meals, long sits in the car, and standing around leaves the body stiff and sluggish. You do not need a punishing detox. You need to move well again. A simple, practical reset, structural where you are stuck and coached where you are weak, to start the year in a better body.
What a month of holidays does to the body
The holidays are great for almost everything except how you move. Long drives or flights to see family, days that turn into hours on a couch, late nights, big meals, and a lot of standing around in kitchens and living rooms. None of it is dramatic on its own. Stacked across a few weeks, it adds up to a body that has been kept in short, fixed positions far more than it has been allowed to move.
So you come out the other side stiff. The hips do not open the way they did. The mid-back feels locked. The first workout back feels like wading through mud, and the motivation to even start it is thin. That is not a character flaw and it is not permanent. It is just what happens when range goes unused for a while. Tissue settles into the shape you keep it in, and a holiday month is a lot of sitting.
Why a punishing detox is the wrong frame
The new year sells you guilt. Crash diets, brutal bootcamps, cleanses that promise to undo December in ten days. The frame is that you did something bad and now you have to suffer to fix it. It is the wrong frame, and it usually backfires. You go too hard on a stiff, deconditioned body, something tweaks, and two weeks later you are back on the couch feeling worse about it.
Here is the more honest version. You did not break anything. You just stopped moving well for a month. The fix is not punishment, it is restoration. Get the body moving through full range again, rebuild the strength that went quiet, and the energy and the motivation come back with it. No suffering required, just a sensible restart.
A practical reset, two parts
A good reset works on the two things the holidays actually changed: the spots that got stuck and the strength that got soft. We handle both.
- Structural where you are stuck. The hip flexors and mid-back take the brunt of a sitting-heavy month. Hands-on structural work opens the tissue that has genuinely shortened, faster than stretching gets there. This is the part that makes you feel taller and looser walking out the door.
- Coached where you are weak. Sitting does not just tighten you, it switches things off. The glutes go quiet, the core gets lazy, posture slumps forward. Coached movement training wakes those up and rebuilds the strength that holds you upright, so the looseness has something to stand on.
If you would rather start small and on your own, the 5-minute mobility routine and the mobility training page are good places to begin the day you decide to. The point is the same either way: move through range you have not used in a while, and do it consistently.
An easy way to start the year
The simplest first step is a free assessment. I watch how you move, find the spots the holidays left stiff and the ones that went weak, and give you a clear, doable plan. No crash program, no guilt, just the shortest route back to feeling like yourself.
If you want the full read, the Body Systems Check is the deeper version: a longer appointment that maps your posture, your movement, and where your body is compensating, and sends you out with a concrete roadmap for the year. Either way, you start the year knowing exactly what your body needs, which beats guessing in a bootcamp.
Why work with me
Most people in this field do one thing. A bodyworker frees tissue. A trainer builds strength. I do both, and that is the difference. I am certified in Anatomy Trains Structural Integration with more than 750 hours of training, I am a teacher-in-training under Tom Myers, and I am a NASM certified personal trainer and corrective exercise specialist. I have spent time in the dissection lab learning how fascia actually connects, so the map I work from is the real one.
That means I can reorganize your structure with hands-on work and then teach your body to hold the change with coached movement. Studio in Santa Cruz, mobile sessions across the Bay Area. Direct, honest, and built around what your body actually needs instead of a template.
Shake off the holidays
You do not need to earn your way out of December with suffering. You just need to move well again. Come in and let's find the shortest path back to that.
Questions, answered
Is this a detox or a cleanse?
+
No. This is a movement reset, not a juice plan. You do not need to punish your body for a month of travel and big meals. You need to move well again. We free the spots that got stiff and rebuild the bits that got weak, and that is what actually makes you feel like yourself.
Why am I so stiff after the holidays?
+
A month of long car rides, plane seats, couches, and standing around in kitchens keeps your hips and spine in short, fixed positions for hours at a time. The tissue adapts to where you spend your time. Spend it folded into a seat and your hip flexors and mid-back tighten to match. The fix is to move through full range again and remind the body it has options.
I gained a little and I feel sluggish. Where do I start?
+
Start with how you move, not the scale. When the body feels stiff and heavy, motivation drops and the workouts you mean to do never happen. Get the hips and spine moving freely first and everything else gets easier to restart. We begin with an honest assessment and build from there, no crash plan.
Do I need hands-on work or just training?
+
It depends on what we find. Some people are mostly weak and deconditioned, which is a training problem. Some are genuinely stuck in the tissue, which responds faster to hands-on structural work. Most are a bit of both. I assess first, then point you at whichever does the most good instead of selling you the whole menu.
How fast will I feel better?
+
Most people feel looser the same day we work on the stuck spots, because we are restoring range that is right there waiting. Feeling genuinely strong and energetic again takes a few weeks of consistent movement. The point of a reset is to get that momentum started, not to fix everything in one visit.
