Structural integration in Santa Cruz

What to expect at your first session, from the studio to what you'll feel after

Booked your first structural integration session in Santa Cruz, or thinking about it? Here is exactly what to expect. What the studio is like, what to wear, what happens in the first 90 minutes, and what you will feel walking out. No surprises, no mystery.

The short version of what happens

Your first structural integration session in Santa Cruz runs about ninety minutes. We talk through what brought you in, I watch you stand and move so I can see your pattern, and then you are on the table while I work with slow, specific pressure into the layers we are after that day. You move while I work. You walk out feeling taller and more open. That is the whole shape of it. Here is each part in detail so nothing is a surprise.

The studio, and the mobile option

The studio is in Santa Cruz, set up for exactly this work, a warm, private space with a good table and room to move. It is the simplest place to start because everything is dialed in. If getting to the studio is hard, or you would rather I come to you, I also offer mobile sessions across the Bay Area and bring the table to your home or space. The work is the same either way. Most people new to it start at the studio and we go from there.

What to wear

Bring comfortable clothes you can move in and that let me see and reach the tissue. Athletic shorts with a tank top or sports bra are ideal. You will be moving during the session, not lying still the whole time, so skip jeans and anything loose or bulky that gets in the way. There is space to change at the studio. If you show up in the wrong thing, do not worry, we make it work.

The intake and assessment

We start with a conversation. What is going on in your body, what you have tried, what you are after, any injuries or surgeries I should know about. This is not a long form to fill out. It is me actually listening so the session is built around you rather than a template.

Then I watch you move. You stand, I look at how you are stacked up in gravity, where you carry tension, how your weight sits through your feet. I might have you walk or do a few simple movements. This is the part that makes the work specific. The lines of fascia tell me where your pattern is being driven from, and often the spot that bothers you is not the source. The source is somewhere upstream, and the assessment is how I find it. If you want, you can read more about how I read a body on the movement assessment page.

The first ninety minutes on the table

Then you are on the table and the hands-on work begins. The first session usually focuses on opening the superficial layer and the breath, the outer sheath of fascia that wraps you and the band of tension around the ribcage. I work slowly and specifically, sinking into a restricted layer and waiting for it to change rather than forcing it.

You will feel it. Real pressure, real sensation, sometimes intense in the way a deep stretch is intense, but always at an edge you can breathe through. It is not the grit-your-teeth pain people sometimes brace for. I check in constantly and you stay in control the entire time. If something is too much, we back off. A signature part of the work is that you move while I work, slowly taking a joint through its range as I engage the tissue, because giving the fascia something to organize around is what helps it reorganize. It is active, not passive, and that is by design.

What you will feel after, and how the series begins

Most people stand up after the first session feeling taller, looser, and more open, sometimes pleasantly spacey or unusually relaxed. Give yourself an easy window afterward rather than rushing into something demanding. The next day you might feel like you used muscles you forgot you had, the same pleasant soreness you get after a good workout. That is the tissue settling into its new organization, and it passes within a day or two.

Where it goes from there is up to you. The first session stands on its own and gives you a true feel for the work. If it makes sense to keep going, structural integration delivers its lasting change as a progressive series, opening the surface, reaching the deep core, then integrating the whole thing so it holds. That arc is the 12-session series, and we would map it to your body specifically. There is no pressure to commit to everything on day one. You experience the work first, then decide.

Why work with me

Most people in this field do one thing. A bodyworker frees tissue. A trainer builds strength. I do both, and that is the difference. I am certified in Anatomy Trains Structural Integration with more than 750 hours of training, I am a teacher-in-training under Tom Myers, and I am a NASM certified personal trainer and corrective exercise specialist. I have spent time in the dissection lab learning how fascia actually connects, so the map I work from is the real one.

That means I can reorganize your structure with hands-on work and then teach your body to hold the change with coached movement. Studio in Santa Cruz, mobile sessions across the Bay Area. Direct, honest, and built around what your body actually needs instead of a template.

First Session Questions

Questions, answered

Where is the studio, and do you come to me?

+

The studio is in Santa Cruz. I also offer mobile sessions across the Bay Area, where I bring the table to your home or space. The studio is the simplest place to start because the setup is dialed, but if travel or scheduling makes coming to you easier, mobile works well too.

What should I wear?

+

Comfortable clothes you can move in, and that let me see and reach the tissue. Athletic shorts with a tank top or sports bra are ideal. You will be moving during the session, not just lying still, so skip jeans or anything loose and bulky. If you forget, we make it work.

How long does the first session take?

+

Plan for about ninety minutes. The first one includes a longer intake and a standing assessment before any hands-on work, so it runs a little fuller than later sessions. Give yourself a relaxed window afterward rather than racing straight back to something demanding.

Will the first session hurt?

+

It should not. You will feel real pressure and sensation as restricted tissue changes, and some of it is intense in a good way, like a deep stretch from the inside. It stays at an edge you can breathe through. I check in constantly and you stay in control the whole time. If anything is too much, we ease off.

Do I have to commit to the whole series on day one?

+

No. The first session stands on its own and gives you a real feel for the work and for me. Plenty of people start with one and decide from there. If it makes sense to continue, the full series is the way to get lasting structural change, but there is no pressure to sign up for everything before you have experienced a session.

How will I feel afterward and the next day?

+

Most people walk out feeling taller, looser, and a bit more open, sometimes a little spacey or relaxed in a way that surprises them. The next day you may feel like you worked muscles you forgot you had, similar to the day after a solid workout. That settles within a day or two and is part of the tissue reorganizing.

No mystery, just good work
